Tyler Grubbs Selected to FWAA Freshman All-America Team

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech freshman linebacker Tyler Grubbs capped off an impressive freshman campaign by being selected to the 20th edition of the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Freshman All-American Team as announced on Monday.

Grubbs became the sixth Freshman All-American in the history of Louisiana Tech football and is the first Bulldog to be honored as a Freshman All-American since Amik Robertson in 2017. Overall, Grubbs is the 59th All-American in program history.

At the start of the 2020 season, Grubbs' name was not listed on the two-deep. Due to injuries and COVID-19-related issues within the team, Grubbs was given the opportunity to start in Tech's season-opener at Southern Miss.

And he never looked back.

Grubbs led the Bulldogs with a career-high 16 tackles against the Golden Eagles and followed the performance with a 12-tackle outing against Houston Baptist. The New Orleans, La., native ended the season with a team-best 99 tackles and finished second on the team in both solo tackles (45) and tackles for loss (9.5). The freshman started in all 10 games for the Bulldogs and had at least nine tackles in eight of those contests. Grubbs ended the 2020 campaign with a career-high 12 solo tackles against Georgia Southern at the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Grubbs finished the season ranked second in C-USA and 25th in the FBS in tackles per game at 9.9, and he was sixth in C-USA in tackles for loss with 9.5. Grubbs registered double-digit tackles in five games during the 2020 season. He also had two pass breakups, one quarterback hurry and one forced fumble during the 2020 campaign.

Grubbs previously earned spots on the ESPN and 247Sports.com Freshman All-American teams. He was also named Second Team All-C-USA, was a C-USA All-Freshman Team selection and earned a spot on the Phil Steele All-Conference USA second team.

The Southeastern Conference led all conferences with eight members followed by the Atlantic Coast's five and four from the Big 12. The American Athletic, Big Ten and Sun Belt each had three representatives among all 10 conferences and one independent represented. Of the 32 players, 15 are redshirt freshmen.

A 13-person panel of nationally-prominent college football experts represented each of the FBS conferences along with independents in the selecting the team. Both true freshmen (17 players) and redshirt freshmen (15 players) were considered for the team and are so noted.
