LA Tech Scores Half a Dozen in Lopsided Win

Lady Techsters improve to 6-2 on the season

MOBILE, Ala. – On Fat Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama, the birthplace of Mardi Gras, the Louisiana Tech soccer team took on Spring Hill.

The Lady Techsters let the good times roll as they netted half a dozen goals in the 6-1 victory over the Badgers at Library Field.

LA Tech (6-2) improved its winning streak to four, getting goals from six different players – two in the first half and four in the second half.

"It was a good run out for the team and we managed to get everyone into the game who could play," said head coach Kevin Sherry.  "Spring Hill was well-organized and made it difficult on us in the first half to break them down.

"The main point we took away from the game was the need to take better care and attention with the ball so as to maximize our opportunities.  Opportunities will be fewer in conference play so we have to learn now how to best take advantage of them when they arrive."

The scoring started in the 11th minute for LA Tech when, for a second straight game, Sophie Fijneman's corner kick produced a positive result.  This free kick found Bailey Botkin who sent the header into net for her first goal as a Lady Techster.

Fijneman who be the scorer on the next goal, giving LA Tech a 2-0 lead as she buried the one-touch shot from 10 yards after a couple of rebounds in the box.

The third goal would not come until five minutes deep into the second period.  Marcella Gallo collected her own shot after it was initially blocked, and placed it into the low corner for her first LA Tech goal.

It was only two minutes later Alma Cedefors made it 4-0 in favor of the Lady Techsters.  Maci Geltmeier sent a cross in from the right where Cedefors delivered the one-touch finish from the top of the 18.

Spring Hill (0-1) got on the scoreboard in the 66th minute with a goal from Emma Robison, ending LA Tech's chance of a fourth straight shutout.

The Lady Techsters would tack on two more goals in the final 20 minutes though.  Morgan Miller collected her second goal of the season after pouncing off a rebound from the opposing keeper.  Lastly, Geltmeier ran down a long ball from Afrah Khan and beat the keeper 1v1.

All 18 players suited up played at least 45 minutes in the match.  Katie Cook and Maggie Boston split time in net with the victory going to the starter Cook.

LA Tech will play its final non-conference match of the season on Saturday, Feb. 20 at MUW.  Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
