ABILENE, Texas – The Louisiana Tech soccer team quickly put its conference loss behind them, defeating McMurry by a final score of 3-1 behind three first-half goals on Monday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.
McMurry (1-2) scored first on a goal in the opening minutes, but LA Tech (7-3) countered with rocket shots by Sophie Fijneman, Erin Chung and Tomoyo Kuroyanagi before halftime to seal the victory.
"I'm glad we got all of our players action as soon as possible following yesterday's loss," said head coach Kevin Sherry. "It was important for us to put that behind us and refocus quickly."
The Lady Techsters instantly found themselves in a hole as the Warhawks struck in the sixth minute. Sky Reynolds sent a pass up the left flank to Alyssa Daily who got in behind the defense and beat the keeper 1v1 for the goal.
The equalizer came in the 24th minute when Amber Posthauer found Sophie Fijneman positioned at the top of the box. The sophomore juked a defender, then sent a left-footed bullet from 20 yards out inside the right post.Â
It was only 19 seconds later that LA Tech took a 2-1 lead. This time it was Fijneman doing the assisting, dropping off a short pass to Erin Chung who took one touch before taking a right-footed shot from 30 yards away past the outreached arms of the keeper.Â
An insurance goal was provided in the 43rd minute when Anna Loftus delivered a short pass to a charging Kuroyanagi who boomed the one-touch shot from 20 yards out inside the left post.
Fijneman has been stellar for the Lady Techsters this season, scoring at least one point in each of the last four games and in five of the last six. The midfielder leads the team in total points (10), assists (four) and is tied for goals (three).Â
Chung netted the game-winning goal, which was also the first goal of her collegiate career. Kuroyanagi posted her second goal of the season.Â
LA Tech outshot McMurry, 17-3, with 11 of those coming on goal. Maggie Boston got the start in net and was credited for one save in the victory.
After playing six straight matches on the road, the Lady Techsters will return to Ruston for a C-USA matchup against UTSA on Friday, March 5. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Ruston Sports Complex.
