RUSTON, La. – For the second straight day Louisiana Tech gave Baylor a scare, but for the second consecutive game the Bears prevailed … this time 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Dr. Billy Bundrick Field.
Tech (4-7), which dropped a 3-1 decision to Baylor on Saturday, had plenty of opportunities over the final three innings on Sunday but stranded six runners – five in scoring position – over the final three frames to fall in heartbreaking fashion.
Senor
Bre Hernandez (1-3) was solid in the circle for Tech, allowing just three runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out three in the complete-game performance. She allowed single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings but kept the Bears (10-3) from ever putting a big offensive frame together.
Tech trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning when
Amanda Gonzalez was hit by a pitch. One batter later,
Zoe Hicks lined a double off the base of the centerfield fence to plate the run and tie the game at 1-1.
Baylor answered with a single run in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. Tech had an opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, but stranded runners on second and third as the final out was recorded via strikeout by Baylor reliever Sidney Mansell.
After the Bears upped the advantage to 3-1 in the sixth inning, the Lady Techsters once again threatened in the bottom half of the frame. However, with runners on the corner, a ground ball out ended the inning.
In Tech's final chance, the Lady Techsters saw
Kylie Neel lead the bottom of the seventh off by being hit by a pitch. Hicks then walked and both runners advanced on a ground out by
Olivia Ellingson.
Freshman
Caroline Easom then singled sharply through the left side to plate pinch runner
Bailey Wright and cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the next two Tech batters were retired on a ground out and strike out to end the game.
The Lady Techsters will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to face Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m.
