FRISCO, Texas – Louisiana Tech and Marshall played a pair of low-scoring, defensive-minded contests to open Conference USA action more than two months ago at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W.V.
When the two teams meet Wednesday at 2 p.m. at The Star in the first round of the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Women's Basketball Championships presented by Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Frisco, a similar type of game is expected.
The contest can be heard on the LA Tech Sports Network on 99.3 FM and will be broadcast live on ESPN+ as both the Lady Techsters and the Thundering Herd look to advance to a match-up against East Division champion Middle Tennessee on Thursday.
Tech defeated Marshall 61-51 in overtime way back on Jan. 1 before falling 61-57 the following day. Louisiana Tech head coach Brooke Stoehr knows what her team will be facing against a Marshall team that ranks No. 3 in the league in scoring defense.
"Those kids play really hard and Tony (Kemper) does a really good job," said Stoehr. "Those kids are coached really well and I think he gets the most out of his players. That group will be hungry. They won a game last year in Frisco by beating Southern Miss. Both teams have experienced players that have been in that situation before. I think it is going to be a fun matchup. It will be two teams that play extremely hard. You have two of the top defensive teams in the league."
The Lady Techsters aren't any slouches defensively, ranking No. 2 in Conference USA in scoring defense (59.91 ppga). This Tech team is looking to become the first Lady Techster team to allow fewer than 60 points per game for an entire season since 2002-03.
Taking care of the basketball will be a priority in the postseason and LA Tech has done exactly that this year, especially down the stretch. Tech has committed just eight turnovers or less in four straight games, the longest such streak in more than a decade. The Lady Techsters are averaging just 14.7 turnovers per game, the fewest by a Tech team since 1995-96.
Marshall has been one of the hottest in the league the last few weeks, splitting series with both the East Division champion (Middle Tennessee) and West Division champion (Rice) over the past few weeks.
"I think they are playing really well right now if you look at who they have played over the last three weeks," said Stoehr. "They split with Rice, North Texas and Middle Tennessee. So obviously if you are doing that then you can compete with the best in the league and can go out and beat anybody.
"I think they probably feel confident in that regard. We feel confident in who we are and how we are playing. We haven't gotten a lot of games in the last few weeks, but I do I feel like we have gotten a lot of good work in with our scout guys in practice. We are just trying to stay in a rhythm and routine."
The winner of Wednesday's contest will advance to face Middle Tennessee on Thursday at 2 p.m.
"I feel really good about where we are," said Stoehr. "For the most part I feel like over the last month the team is trending in the right way. We are defending really well and rebounding. We are starting to score the ball better. Mentally I like where this team is."
