LA Tech Falls in Season Finale

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech got on the scoreboard first Saturday morning, but for a second straight game the opponent rallied.  UAB ended up scoring three goals in the second half to take the 3-1 win at the Ruston Sports Complex.

The season finale for LA Tech (9-7, 1-5 C-USA) was originally slated for 6 p.m. on Friday night, but storms pushed the match to an 8 a.m. kickoff the following day.

It was very much an even match in the first period.  Both teams had three corner kicks and a handful of scoring opportunities that went mostly off target.

Klesha Darroux subbed in for Leonie Machauer in the 29th minute and would notch her fourth goal of the season with only 12 seconds remaining until halftime.

It started with a free kick that was cleared away by UAB (8-5-1, 3-3- C-USA).  Valeria Rios chased it down though and sent it back into the box where Elizabeth Doll flicked it forward to Darroux.  The senior easily planted the one-touch goal into the back of the net.

The second period was much more frantic.  Early on, both teams nearly capitalized.  For LA Tech, it was Gabrielle Parent who took a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that hit the post.

Things began to get more physical with about 20 minutes remaining and the Lady Techsters still clinging to a 1-0 lead.  UAB's Laura Zemberyova was issued a yellow card, but LA Tech's free kick attempt deflected wide and the team was unable to score off the ensuing corner kick.

The Blazers went on the counterattack afterward, which was stopped by Doll's tackle, but the head referee whistled her for a yellow card.  UAB equalized on this free kick as Kassandra Daniel headed it in from the top of the six.

A similar situation occurred in the 73rd minute when a Blazer broke free, then got dispossessed by Doll.  But again, Doll was whistled for her second yellow card, eliminating her from the game.  This foul occurred in the box, rewarding UAB with a penalty kick.  Stella Kiss took it and scored inside the left post.

The Blazers' Morgan Halliwill tacked on an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.

UAB held a 16-9 shot advantage while LA Tech had a 7-5 edge on corner kicks.  Sophie Fijneman led the team with three shots.  In net, Maggie Boston was credited with six saves.
