LAKE CHARLES, La. – Louisiana Tech put it all together on Sunday afternoon, claiming a 7-0 shutout victory over McNeese State at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
Â
After downing in-state foe Northwestern State in its home finale, LA Tech (9-10) concluded the regular season with a sweep of all six singles courts and the doubles point on the road against another in-state opponent in McNeese (1-17).
Â
"Today was exactly the kind of win we needed to close out the regular season before heading into the conference tournament," said head coach
Amanda Stone. "We have been playing hard and fighting all year and getting a shutout win feels good and earned. We showed up big on all the lines and really delivered.Â
Â
"I am really proud of our team this year. We battled the full season and hope to carry this momentum into the tourney."
Â
This was the Lady Techsters first 7-0 road shutout since 2019 and it all got started with courts one and three setting the table in doubles.
Â
Leonie Schuknecht and
Ilana Tetruashvili remained in their winning groove, taking all six games for the 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. It was their team-leading 10th victory (have won 10 of their last 12 matches). They are the first LA Tech duo to reach double-digit wins at the top spot since 2016.
Â
Clinching the opening point was
Alexia Romero and
Claudia Oravcova posting a 6-3 win at the No. 3 position. This tandem has won three of their last four matches while improving to 5-2 together on this line.
Â
LA Tech did not let up in singles. Schuknecht was in complete control on court one, defeating Sofia Moreno by a final score of 6-0, 6-2. Not long after,
Madalena Amil finished up with an equally dominant game on court five, overpowering Hanna Blinouskaya by a score of 6-0, 6-1 for her fourth consecutive victory.Â
Â
Up 3-0, the clinching point came from Oracvova who tallied a 6-4, 6-3 win versus Yukina Abe on court six. Also winning in straight sets was Tetruashvili, registering a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Carlotta Romito.Â
Â
The final two courts split sets with both going the way of LA Tech.Â
Anastasiia Salenko claimed a 10-1 super tiebreaker over her opponent Natalia Ballo and Romero pulled out a 6-4 third set to outlast Luna Jokanovic.Â
Â
The win was LA Tech's sixth in the last seven meetings against McNeese State and just the fifth shutout victory in the series.
Â
The Lady Techsters will now await the announcement of the 2021 Conference USA Tournament bracket. The event will start on Thursday, April 22 in Denton, Texas.
