BOWLING GREEN, Kentucky – In a rematch of the 2019 Conference USA Championship game, Louisiana Tech will face Marshall Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at WKU Softball Complex on day one of the tournament championship.
The No. 6 seeded Lady Techsters (22-29) face the No.7 seeded Thundering Herd (19-12) in the second game of the day. No. 5 seed Middle Tennessee will face the No. 8 seed UTSA in the first of four scheduled games at noon.
Every game except Saturday's championship game can be seen on ESPN+.
The winner of the Tech-Marshall game will advance to face No. 3 seed Charlotte 49ers at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. The Lady Techsters must win both games to advance to Thursday, when the double elimination portion of the tournament begins.
"When we are firing on all cylinders and doing the little things, we play well," said Tech interim head coach
Bianca Duran. "We have to continue to fight and rise above any adversity we face over the course of the week. If we come out with energy and score some runs early, it sets a strong tone for us. This team has a lot of fight in them, and I'm excited to see what we can do this week to bounce back from last weekend."
LA Tech has won two the past three Conference USA Tournaments, capturing the 2017 title in Hattiesburg, Mississippi (defeated FIU 1-0) and the 2019 title in Birmingham, Alabama (defeated Marshall 3-1).
However, only three players remain on the Tech roster from the 2019 championship team in senior
Zoe Hicks and juniors
Lindsay Edwards and
Hannah Koenig.
Seniors
Bre Hernandez (9-10, 3.12 ERA) and
Audrey Pickett (5-11, 3.66 ERA) will lead Tech into Wednesday's action while
Lauren Menzina (4-1, 3.33),
Kara Goff (0-1, 3.23), Koenig (1-4, 6.12) and
Emma Hutchinson (3-1, 4.50) could all see time in the circle this week.
Marshall is one of the top power hitting teams in Conference USA. The Herd have hit 47 home runs led by all-conference infielder Ally Harrell (.400, 10 home runs).
