ABOUT LOUISIANA TECH (6-3)
Louisiana Tech will look to bounce back from an overtime loss to Vanderbilt last Thursday and move to 7-3 for the fifth year in a row.
LA Tech's defense has been a strong suit this season, featuring a top-50 ranked scoring defense in the NCAA at 56.4 while holding opponents to .359 shooting, good for 50
th in the NCAA. Tech has held opponents to under 60 points in all six wins this season.
Offensively, LA Tech is averaging 67.4 ppg on .448 shooting from the field, which ranks No. 2 among Conference USA programs. Tech has scored 70 or more in four of their last five outings.
Tech ranks tops in C-USA in assists at 15.8 per game, thanks 4.4 per game from
Silvia Nativi, whose 3.64 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks No. 7 in the nation.
All-Conference preseason selections
Keiunna Walker and
Anna Larr Roberson lead the Techsters in double figures at 15.2 and 13.7 ppg, respectively.
Roberson reached a season-high 23 points in the loss to Vanderbilt and has three double-doubles on the year. Walker continues to move up the all-time scoring list, currently sitting at No. 21.
LA Tech's bench has produced in the early averaging 23.8 ppg. The bench has reached double figures in every game, including 20-plus performances in seven of nine games.
ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA (2-5)
South Alabama will continue their non-conference slate with a trip to Ruston after splitting their last two contests with a home win over Florida A&M (62-52) and falling 64-46 at Mercer in their last outing.
South Alabama, who was 13
th in the Sun Belt preseason poll, has picked up both wins at home but are 0-3 on the road in 2022-23.
The Jaguars are led by Terry Fowler in his ninth season, compiling a 124-155 record in Mobile. On the court, South Alabama is led by Kelsey Thompson (10.7 ppg) and Nadia Howard (10.0 ppg) in double figures.
Thompson is a 5-10 freshman guard and local Mobile product who scored over 1,500 career points in her six-year prep career at Davison HS. Howard, a 5-9 sophomore guard, is the only Jaguar to start all seven contests and has reached double figures in five games, including a season-high 15 in her last outing against Mercer.
The Jaguars have used a deep rotation this season with nine players making starts and 11 players averaging 10-plus minutes and are averaging 58.3 ppg on .339 shooting, while giving up 63.7 ppg on .391 shooting.
THE SERIES
LA Tech and South Alabama will meet for the first time in over 20 years Monday night for the 22
nd all-time meeting between the Techsters and Jaguars.
LA Tech is a perfect 21-0 all-time and 11-0 in Ruston, including the last meeting in 2000-01 (LA Tech, 71-46). The two programs first met in 1991-92.
Tech has reached the century mark on three occasions, with a game-high of 115 points back in 1997-98, which accounts for the largest margin of victory at 71 points (115-44). The closest contest came in 1991-92, at 17 points, 70-53.
Tech has scored at least 70 points in 20 of 21 games, with the series low at 67 points.
