@LATechSB downs Lipscomb in tournament finale

YOUNGSVILLE, La. – Audrey Pickett pitched a complete-game, 1-hit shutout as Louisiana Tech defeated Lipscomb 3-0 Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Mardi Gras Mambo.

With the victory, the Lady Techsters (9-6) ended the weekend with 3-2 record, including a 10-3 win over Eastern Illinois and a 2-0 loss to No. 2 ranked Alabama during Saturday's action.

"I was happy with how we showed up and competed all weekend," said Tech head coach Josh Taylor. "We still have to learn a lot about ourselves and how to show up and compete at a high level, day in and day out. We still have a lot of work to do especially in situations. We have to execute better in offensive situations, whether that's getting a bunt down or just moving runners. We have to be better offensively.

"I was very, very pleased with our pitching all weekend. All of them threw well. (Lauren) Menzina pitched really well against Alabama on Saturday. Audrey was solid all weekend. We played a very clean game today and we were petty good defensively most of the weekend. We just need to continue to move forward in getting better in all phases."

In Sunday's win over Lipscomb, Pickett (6-2) allowed just three base runners all day, including an infield single, a walk and a hit batter. She struck out seven in the contest to pick up her third win of the weekend. For the weekend, she allowed just three runs and 11 hits in 19.0 innings of work.

Offensively, Brooke Diaz gave Tech a 1-0 lead with a solo home run – her third of the season – in the bottom of the second inning. Sierra Sacco added a two-run single in the bottom of the fourth to round out the scoring for the Lady Techsters. Diaz, Amanda Gonzalez, Bailey Wright and Tanjala Smith each registered two hits in the win.

The Lady Techsters posted a 1-1 mark on Saturday. In the 10-3 win over Eastern Illinois, Lindsay Edwards gave Tech an early advantage with a grand slam home run – her second dinger of the year.

Tech fell 2-0 to Alabama Saturday night as Menzina held the Crimson Tide to just two runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of action.

Tech will face McNeese State in Lake Charles on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before returning to Ruston to host Southeastern Wednesday at 4 p.m.
