Sonny Cumbie Press Conference Week 4

Coach Cumbie previews the Bulldogs' matchup with South Alabama

RUSTON, (Sept. 21, 2022) – Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Cumbie and select players spoke with the media on Tuesday in advance of Tech's contest at South Alabama on Saturday.

Opening statement…
"South Alabama is a really good football team. Kane Womack has done a great job in his second year. They are physical on defense and offensively they have done a good job with Major Applewhite as their offensive coordinator… It is a big challenge for us. They outplayed UCLA for four quarters and then at the end UCLA was bale to get a field goal. Thy went on the road across the country and were able to play well. We are going to have to be at our best to win this football game."

On gesture this past weekend…
"It popped up on Thursday when Ella (Bresee) passed away and the standpoint of trying to provide some encouragement for a family, team program and player that was heartbroken. We were wanting to help out and bring some encouragement and support to their family and team at the time. Ziad Qubti and Daniela Torres do a great job for this program and they really spearheaded the effort from that standpoint. We are big on writing letters because I think it shows care. They were able to organize it and put it all together. It was not a mandatory deal but all of our players did it.  Service is a big part of our program and we want to be people that give and not constantly take."

On using the Clemson game as a confidence booster…
"It can be a confidence booster for our team if we practice well this week. We have a lot of improvement to do. I was very proud of our team when it was 34-6 they did not go to the sideline with bad body language… They bowed up and fought to get it to 34-20. I am proud of them for their effort. We want to provide an experience for our players where they play, grow and learn more than just wins and losses. It is a confidence booster if we use it the right way. It will benefit us if it gets us motivated."

On both teams coming off losses against big opponents…
"You are trying to win every time you step out on the field. They will be no different. They are a very strong and physical football team that plays fast. We want to play the best game we can play and see constant improvement week-to-week. It is important to play the best we can since we head into a bye week after this and then we head into conference."
