RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech Volleyball team won 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-18) in its first conference game of the season Friday night against Charlotte inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.
LA Tech (7-8) came out ready to face off with Charlotte (6-7) and did not disappoint.
Andrea Spasojevic added another double-double to the record books giving her six for the season. She began her run with five kills and two digs in the first set. The Lady Techsters found themselves trailing midway though the set until at the very end when Spasojevic delivered a kill to tie the game at 24-24.
Imana Ellis then punches out a kill followed by an ace from
McKenzie Johnson for the set point.
Early in the second set, the 49ers took an early four-point lead until LA Tech produced a 6-0 scoring run. The scoring run began with a bad serve from Charlotte, followed by Spasojevic coming back with a kill before the Niners had two bad sets. The Lady Techsters, tied at 11-11, took the lead with a kill from
Sydney Jackwin. The 49ers battled until the end, but could not finish it out.
Chard'e Vanzandt knocked out her third kill of the night to set the Lady Techsters in a winning position. Spasojevic then delivered a service ace followed by another kill from Jackwin for the set point.
LA Tech did not give Charlotte a chance to make a comeback in the third set. The Lady Techsters gained a six-point lead early on and were able to maintain their lead up until the end. The large lead was produced from three errors by the 49ers and a kill from Spasojevic. Spasojevic finished the match with 10 kills, 10 digs, three aces and a total of 14 points. Along with her kills,
Meghan Dunnigan, Johnson, and Jackwin all collected 10 digs for themselves. Vanzandt had 12 kills on 22 attacks along with three digs.
QUOTABLES
Head Coach Amber McCray
"This is a huge win for our program. We have been talking all week about having strength in numbers, and tonight's match could not have been any more of an indication of that. It took everyone to beat a really good, well-coached Charlotte team who has beaten a number of Power 5's this year. We had 4 players in double-digit digs, all five attackers had six or more kills, and
Kalee Cadwell set a phenomenal match putting our attackers in some really good situations. Our passers kept us in system all night and our servers were clutch in staying aggressive to run points behind the service line. Balance was our key tonight, and that's exactly what we will continue to work to be every time we step on the court."
