ABOUT LA TECH (2-3-1)
Louisiana Tech will play its third road match in a row when they arrive in Huntsville off the heels of a back-to-back SEC road swing in Mississippi.
The Techsters fell to No. 12 Ole Miss (0-5) and could not hang on against Mississippi State (1-2) after taking a 1-0 lead into the half time locker room.
The Bulldogs evened the match in the 62' and had a chance to take the lead off a PK in the 77' but missed wide left. However, Mississippi State broke through in the 82' to claim the win.
Tech has battled several injuries on the year and has yet to see all-conference defender
Josie Studer in the lineup this season.
However, the young group has gained valuable experience and seen new faces make instant impacts, such a freshman forward
Flavie Dube who leads the team in goals (2) after scoring in her first career start against Mississippi State.
Sophomore keeper
Sydnee Korchak has started five of the six matches registering 23 saves, including tying a career-best with eight saves at Ole Miss. The week prior, she was named the Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Week for posting back-to-back shutouts against Abilene Christian and UL-Lafayette.
Tech's defensive backline has been anchored by some familiar faces, in
Sophie Fijneman and
Laura Ogando. Fijneman leads the team in minutes played and has played the full 90 minutes in five of the six matches, including the last four in a row.
Sophomore
Kalli Matlock has played the second-most minutes in 2022 and is second on the team in points (3, 1 goal, 1 assist) and is tied for the team lead with Dube in shots (8) and shots on goal (5).
Alma Cedefors and
Carmen Suarez join Matlock and Dube as the other Techsters to score a goal this season, each with one a piece.
Riley Bonadie leads the team with two assists.
LA Tech will be searching for their first road win of the season. The Techsters went 2-5-2 on the road in 2021.
ABOUT SAM HOUSTON STATE (0-3-1)
Sam Houston State comes into Tuesday's matchup looking for their first win of the season after dropping the first three matches and finishing in a 1-1 draw with Houston Baptist last Sunday.
Sam Houston is led by first year head coach Sonia Curvelo who arrives in Huntsville after a successful four-year stint at Prairie View A&M where she won two SWAC conference championships leading the program to two NCAA tournament appearances.
On the pitch, the Bearcats bring back all-conference performer in senior forward Brooke Jones. Jones was named second-team All-WAC last season and was all named second-team All-Southland after the 2020-21 season. Jones has yet to score this season.
Sam Houston's two goals this season have been by graduate student forward Kailey Pena and senior forward Lexi Primacio.
The Bearcats have used two keepers, each with two starts a piece, in junior Savannah Hall and senior Tatum Krueger. Hall has given up six goals posting 15 saves, while Krueger has allowed four goals and registered 11 saves. Tatum made a third appearance and has logged the most minutes in goal for Sam Houston with 195 compared to Hall's 165.
THE SERIES
Tuesday's matchup will be the fifth meeting all-time between the Techsters and the Bearkats on the pitch. LA Tech leads the series 2-0-2.
The series dates back to 2009 in Huntsville, Texas, where the first meeting ended in a 2OT 0-0 draw.
Tech picked up the first series win in Ruston (2-1) the following season in 2010.
The two sides met again in Huntsville in 2011, which produced another 2OT 0-0 draw. They would not meet again until last season, where LA Tech took the 4-0 shutout victory that saw four different Techsters score goals.
