RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech defensive back
Michael Richard was named the 2023 Conference USA Freshman of the Year, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Richard led CUSA freshmen with seven pass breakups, which ranked seventh nationally among FBS freshmen. Opponents completed just 40 percent of passes (14-35) against him this season, allowing just one touchdown in 249 defensive snaps. His 83.5 coverage grade was the fourth-best mark among all CUSA defensive backs.
The New Orleans native also tallied 32 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two quarterback hurries. On special teams, Richard was one of three CUSA players to return a punt for a touchdown this season when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season finale against Jacksonville State.
Richard's Freshman of the Year selection marks the first time a Bulldog has earned the distinction since 2012, when running back Kenneth Dixon was named WAC Freshman of the Year.
