NEW YORK – Louisiana Tech tight end
Eli Finley was named the Week Four John Mackey Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon. The award is presented weekly to the top-performing tight end in college football.
Finley, who was named to the John Mackey Award preseason watch list, earned the honor after recording a career-high 155 yards on six receptions in LA Tech's 30-20 win over Southern Miss on Saturday.
The Texas native opened the game with a 72-yard reception on Tech's first offensive play and added a 47-yard grab on the Bulldogs' second offensive drive. His 155-yard outing is the most by a tight end in the FBS this season.
The 6-foot-6 junior leads the team with 14 receptions for 231 yards. He ranks fifth in the nation among tight ends in receiving yards and ranks 99
th among all players.
The John Mackey Tight End of the Week is an honor distinct and different from the annual John Mackey Award. The weekly honor was started in 2004 to draw attention to individual play by Tight Ends during the active season. The Tight End of the Week acknowledgement does not have a direct bearing on the final John Mackey Award selection process.
