RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech defensive back
Michael Richard was named Second-Team Freshman All-American by The Athletic, the publication announced on Saturday.
Richard led CUSA freshmen with seven pass breakups, which ranked seventh nationally among FBS freshmen. Opponents completed just 40 percent of passes (14-35) against him this season, allowing just one touchdown in 249 defensive snaps. His 83.5 coverage grade was the fourth-best mark among all CUSA defensive backs.
The New Orleans native also tallied 32 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and two quarterback hurries. On special teams, Richard was one of three CUSA players to return a punt for a touchdown this season when he returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the season finale against Jacksonville State.
With the distinction, Richard became the eighth Bulldog in program history to earn freshman all-american honors. Other Bulldogs to achieve the honor are,
Marquis Crosby (2022), Kenneth Dixon (2012), O'Shea Dugas (2015), Jaylon Ferguson (2015),
Tyler Grubbs (2020), Ethan Reed (2016) and Amik Robertson (2017).
