BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Louisiana Tech kept its winning streak alive on Saturday, making it seven straight victories by defeating UAB, 4-2, at the Hoover Met Tennis Center.
Â
With only two Conference USA matchups on the schedule, LA Tech (15-4, 1-0 C-USA) claimed its first league victory after getting the doubles point plus singles wins on courts one, two, and five.
Â
After going 0-2 together this past weekend in doubles,
Olga Bienzobas and
Alexia Romero got on track by cruising to a 6-1 victory on court two. UAB (7-9, 0-2, C-USA) got the win on court one though, making court three the deciding match for the opening point.
Â
With
Leonie Schuknecht and
Ilana Tetruashvili down 3-4, the duo reeled off three straight games to take it, 6-4, and give the Lady Techsters a 1-0 advantage going into singles.
Â
Bienzobas was just as impressive in singles, collecting her sixth straight win after overpowering Sydney Clarke at the No. 2 position with a 6-2, 6-2 victory to make it a 2-0 lead for LA Tech.
Â
The Blazers responded with their first point of the match, provided by Adela Wasserbauerova who got the better of
Najah Dawson at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Â
While courts two and three wrapped up in straight sets, the remaining four courts split sets.Â
Ana Rodrigues lost the first set in her match to Vanessa Mellynchuk, but came back to win it 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 5 position.Â
Â
UAB closed the gap again with its own come-from-behind victory as Annalisa Smith won sets two and three to defeat
Tiffani Nash on court four.
Â
Holding on to a 3-2 lead, Schuknecht kept with the theme of coming from behind. After dropping the first set, 5-7, to Maggie White, the junior came through with the clinching point with set wins of 6-2, 6-4 on court one.

QUOTABLES
Head coach
Amanda Stone
Â
"Within every season, you have a match like this where maybe you are not playing your A game against a motivated, talented opponent. To fight through that adversity and get the win is great to see. UAB really battled from the start so credit to them for really pushing us. The doubles point was huge and turned out to be the key today."
Â
"I am really proud of Olga who was dominating today and I cannot say enough about Leonie who clinched the match for us despite not being 100 percent physically. Overall, I am very happy this team continues to put in the work and get the positive results."
