RUSTON – Louisiana Tech's historic season got even more historic on Thursday as the Lady Techsters swept Grambling State in a pair of shutout victories on an overcast day at the LA Tech Tennis Complex.
Â
With the wins of 5-0 and 4-0, No. 65-ranked LA Tech (19-4) set a new program record for longest home winning streak with its 13th consecutive on Alabama Ave. courts. They Lady Techsters also extended their overall winning streak to 11 (second longest ever) while reaching 19 wins (second most ever).
Â
The doubles duo of
Leonie Schuknecht and
Ilana Tetruashvili got the winning started with a 6-1 on court one. Then it was the tandem of
Olga Bienzobas and
Alexia Romero who clinched the opening point with a 6-1 of their own.Â
Â
After helping secure a 1-0 lead, Romero was celebrated as part of Senior Day. The fourth-year Lady Techster from Argentina collected her 119th career victory with that doubles win.
Â
The rest of the squad provided the victories to defeat GSU (3-12) in match one –
Najah Dawson (6-1, 6-1 on court two), Schuknecht (6-1, 6-0 on court one), Tetruashvili (6-1, 6-0 on court four), and
Valentina Vazquez (6-0, 6-1 on court six).
Â
After a 30-minute break, LA Tech got back to more winning. Vazquez and Bienzobas teamed up for the first time this spring and produced a 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot. The top doubles duo of Dawson and
Ana Rodrigues clinched the point soon thereafter, winning 6-1.
Â
With the Lady Tigers defaulting at the No. 6 position in singles, LA Tech needed just two wins to clinch the match. Bringing those two matches home were Vazquez again with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jelani Jones at the No. 5 spot and Bienzobas who downed Takudzwa Mawisire 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1.
