Delfin Named to 2023 Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

RUSTON, La. – Louisiana Tech redshirt senior offensive lineman Abraham Delfin was named to the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy Watchlist, the organization announced Thursday.

The Wuerffel Trophy is known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service."

Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented in February annually in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service worldwide.

Delfin's community service projects have included Dogs with a Cause, L-TAC Thank-a-ton, 4 Paws Ball, and the Big Event.

The Plaquemine, La., native and seventh-year senior has made 25 career starts and is the most experienced Bulldog on the roster. He saw limited action in 2022 after starting the first three games of the season before sitting out due to injury. He played a pivotal role in the Bulldogs' 300-yard rushing performance in a 52-17 win over Stephen F. Austin. The Bulldogs' 300 yards in the win were the most since Oct. 12, 2019.

In addition to his community service and on-the-field performance, Delfin has excelled in the classroom, making the most of his seven years in Ruston. Delfin has a bachelor's degree in Construction Engineering and Technology with a minor in Business Administration. In addition to his bachelor's degree, he has a Master's of Business Administration and a Master of Science Engineering and Technology Management.

The Wuerffel Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast more than 800 recipients, dating back to 1935.

Louisiana Tech will play a fast, exciting brand of football when Head Coach Sonny Cumbie's Bulldogs open the 2023 season with an 8 p.m. CUSA showdown against FIU on August 26 inside Joe Aillet Stadium.

LA Tech has six home games at Joe Aillet Stadium during the 2023 season. After the week zero conference matchup with FIU (August 26), LA Tech will host non-conference foes Northwestern State (September 9) and North Texas (September 16). Tech closes out the home slate in conference play with Western Kentucky (October 5), New Mexico State (October 24), and a homecoming bout with Sam Houston (November 11).
