Bulldogs Conclude Play at Hurricane Invite

LA Tech defeated Wyoming, 6-1, before falling by the same score to host Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Louisiana Tech closed out its win over Wyoming, winning 6-1 before falling by the same score to host Tulsa on Sunday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

After winning five of six singles matches yesterday versus Wyoming (0-3), LA Tech (1-2) wrapped up the match by sweeping all three doubles lines.

Ana Rodrigues/Zoie Epps and Alice Brook/Maria Tsironi each claimed wins of 6-4 on courts one and two, respectively.  The third victory came from the new pairing of June Vigneron and Soha Singh who registered a 6-2 win on court three.

LA Tech turned around and faced an experienced Tulsa (3-0) squad which had four seniors in its lineup.  Always a tough doubles team, the Bulldogs gave the Golden Hurricane everything they had to start the match.

Mio Kozaki and Nina Skoric were backed together after winning in their first match of the Hurricane Invite over Arkansas State.  They continued their winning ways against Tulsa, defeating the pairing of Erin McKenzie and Tayla Wilmot, 6-4, at the No. 3 position.

With the Golden Hurricane winning at No. 2, the doubles point came down to court one where Rodrigues and Epps were in a battle with the 26th-ranked team in the country Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings.  The Bulldogs would ultimately fall, 7-5.

Tulsa took a 2-0 lead with a straight sets win at No. 1, but Epps continued her winning ways at No. 2.  The sophomore made it a clean sweep this weekend, winning all three matches capped by a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Hutchings.

Tsironi nearly tied the team match up at No. 3, but the freshman fell in three sets by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.  The same happened for Skoric would was able to force a third set by winning the second in a tiebreaker, but fell 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 4.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Amy Sargeant

On the opening weekend of the spring season ...
"This weekend was full of highly competitive matches from everyone and was a great opportunity to see where we are at.  I was pleasantly surprised with how we competed in both singles and doubles. We are an extremely competitive team with a lot of talent and potential to be a top-75 program. In order for us to grow and maintain this level, we need to take care of the details and focus on what we can control. Success will always find you working.

On Zoie Epps going 3-0 in singles ...
"Zoie continues to commit to the process and buy into being a fearless competitor. She is the heartbeat of this team and a role model to look up to."
