Bulldogs Fall To Liberty In CUSA Quarterfinals

Ashley Leonhart scored her first career goal in the first three minutes of the match before the Flames responded with four unanswered goals.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Louisiana Tech women's soccer concluded its 2025 season at the Conference USA Tournament on Sunday, falling to the Liberty Flames, 4-1, at Osborne Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The Bulldogs opened up with their fastest goal of the season in the third minute on an early counter attack. A pass was delivered to the front of the 18 before deflecting off a Liberty defender and falling to the feet of Ashley Leonhart, who then fired a shot that found the back right side of the net to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage.

This was the fastest goal scored by a Tech player since Emma Jones scored the opener in the third minute against Jackson State on August 29, 2024.

Liberty, who was the top scoring offense in the conference entering the postseason, posted the equalizer 10 minutes later from Ivy Garner before she gave the Flames the lead in the 25th minute with her second first-half goal.

Halle Engle and Isabella Wedemeyer added on in the 29th minute and 37th minute to give Liberty a 4-1 lead heading into the halftime break.

The Bulldogs showed a more balanced performance in the second half, adding three more shots and holding Liberty scoreless through the remaining 45 minutes. Abby Hanton tried an effort at providing an offensive spark with two of her three second-half attempts being put on target, but the Bulldogs were unable to break through for the remainder of the contest.

Head Coach Steve Voltz following Sunday's match:
"One of today's takeaways is that it was clear a couple of our younger players just weren't ready for the big stage. Two of our freshmen struggled defensively, and when we were under some pressure we weren't tidy enough, technically speaking, to clear the ball and possess it, and we gave in some to the pressure Liberty put on us. We were able to find a few more chances once we were able to get out of it, and overall, we just continued to compete. I give my compliments to the team for responding the way they did in the second half and not caving in. That shows a lot about the character of the team. It shows when you play against some of the better players in the conference, but we showed we earned the right to be here and we had a great, strong finish to the season, and now we have to take that as motivation into the offseason."
