Bulldogs Sweep Lady Tigers behind Dramatic Second-Set Rally

LA Tech wrapped up non-conference play with a 3-0 win over Grambling State

GRAMBLING – Louisiana Tech picked up a straight-sets sweep over crosstown foe Grambling State Tuesday night inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

LA Tech (7-7) controlled the match with efficient hitting and timely serving, highlighted by a dramatic second-set comeback against GSU (1-9) that swung momentum firmly in their favor.

The Bulldogs jumped out quickly behind kills from a variety of outside hitters, building a 20-12 lead while forcing Grambling into early timeouts.  LA Tech would close out the set comfortably, 25–18.

The turning point of the match came in the second set.  LA Tech trailed 20–24 and faced four set points, but the Bulldogs rattled off six straight points, fueled by Gillispie and Giulia Bonifacio at the net, plus strong serving from Grace Luevanos.  Multiple Grambling attack errors sealed the comeback, giving the 'Dogs a 26–24 win and a commanding 2–0 lead.

With the momentum fully theirs, the Bulldogs dominated the final set.  Luevanos and Gabrielle Hairston led a balanced attack that posted a blistering .577 hitting percentage.  Riley Steubing's back-to-back service aces built an early cushion, and LA Tech never looked back, cruising to a 25–12 clincher.

The Bulldogs finished with a .298 hitting percentage compared to just .066 for the Lady Tigers. Luevanos paced the offense with 11 kills to go along with 11 digs for a double-double, while Carter tallied a match-high 15 assists.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Scott Mattera

"We knew Grambling was dangerous after they swept their last match and even though we won comfortably in game one, I did not think we were clean enough.  So, the battle that was game two was kind of inevitable.  We showed some solid resilience in coming back to win that one and fixed some of the mental mistakes to cruise in game three."

UP NEXT
LA Tech will open Conference USA play this weekend as the Bulldogs take on the Liberty Lady Flames on Friday and Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia.
