RUSTON – The Bulldogs (8-3) fell short Saturday afternoon to the #12 Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-1), 11-0, in seven innings at the Love Shack.
Southern Miss and LA Tech both scattered eight combined base runners through the first three innings of a scoreless contest, with Tech drawing walks in the first and second before doubling in the second and getting a base hit and a fielder's choice in the third.
The Eagles put runners on the corners with one out in the fourth before plating the first run on a sacrifice fly before a bunt single and an error loaded the bases. Two bases-loaded walks and a two-run single followed to give Southern Miss a 6-0 lead entering the home half of the frame.
A no-out two-run blast put the Eagles out front by eight in the fifth before a pair of RBI base hits and another sac fly put the Eagles out by 11 runs.
Saturday's contest was the first time the Bulldogs have been run-ruled at home by a non-conference opponent since March 5, 2014 in a 20-3 loss suffered to McNeese. It is also the first time the 'Dogs have been shut out at home by a non-conference opponent since March 8, 2025 in a 9-0 loss to South Alabama.
The series finale is set for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, March 1 at the Love Shack. Live stream will be available on ESPN+, and radio broadcasts can be found on 97.7 FM, LA Tech Athletics app and the Varsity Network app.
Quotables
Head Coach Lane Burroughs:
"I don't have a lot of words to say—I'm speechless. I'm embarrassed. I've been the coach here for 10 years—I don't know if we've ever been run ruled [at home]. I like this team. They work hard, [but] I did not see a lot of competing and toughness tonight. The most disappointing thing to me is we had a great crowd, a beautiful day, and you've got people that work hard to spend money for tickets and bring their kids to the game, have a good time—and we go out and play absolute golf. I'm not taking anything away from Southern Miss, but I don't care who we're playing. We don't need fake energy. We need guys that come out ready compete every day. After last night, I couldn't wait to get to the ballpark today and this is the last thing I saw coming. I'm the head coach so it falls on me, and we'll figure it out. I didn't see a lot of fight tonight, and that falls on me. My intention is to come out and win a ball game tomorrow. This game doesn't define us—it's not going to be the defining moment of our team, or maybe it will. It could get some people's attention, and we'll turn it in the right direction. I've seen that happen before. But, we're a long way away from where we need to be and what I thought this team would be 11 games in. I think we're better than we showed tonight."
