Bulldogs Defeat Owls, Complete Perfect CUSA Run

LA Tech improved to 16-3 on the season with a 4-2 road win over KSU

KENNESAW, Ga. – In a showdown between two of the hottest teams in Conference USA, Louisiana Tech continued its dominant run, defeating Kennesaw State 4-1 on Sunday at the Betty Siegel Courts.

Both LA Tech (16-3, 5-0 CUSA) and KSU (11-6, 3-1 CUSA) entered the matchup undefeated in league play.  The Bulldogs had won 12 of their last 13 while the Owls had won 11 of their last 13.  The clash would go the way of the 'Dogs who combined the doubles point with straight set singles wins on courts one, four, and six.

The all-important doubles point would be secured by LA Tech.  It would take a full hour to do so as Alice Brook and Maria Tsironi prevailed first with a 6-3 victory on court two.  The remaining two courts with both go into a tiebreaker and both would be claimed by the Bulldogs.

After getting down 3-0 early, June Vigneron and Mio Kozaki battled back to win 7-6 (3) on court three.  Providing the doubles sweep was the 69th-ranked duo of Zoie Epps and Isabella Walker winning 7-6 (5) for their fourth straight victory.

Singles were evenly matched as the Bulldogs and Owls each took three first sets.  KSU evened the team score with a win at the No. 2 position, but Epps quickly gave LA Tech the lead back by overpowering Ema Baraniakova 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 for her 13th consecutive victory.

Mio Kozaki copied Epps with her singles score, which was also her 13th straight win.  The senior outdueled Laura Nadaska 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 to give LA Tech a 3-1 advantage.

The Owls countered with a straight set victory at No. 3, but not long after that it was Walker who came back from 4-1 down to defeat Rianna Coreisa 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 6 spot.  It was the freshman's fourth clincher of the season.

QUOTABLES
Head coach Amy Sargeant

"Today was a strong way to close out the regular season on our terms.  Our focus was simple – compete fearlessly, have fun, and bring great energy.  Doubles stood out, especially on court two where Maria and Alice controlled the net with confidence.  Courts one and three were tight in score and the difference came when we committed and played decisively to secure the point."

"In singles, we set the tone early, earning wins on two courts to take a 3-1 lead behind composed, disciplined performances from Zoie and Mio.  Issy showed tremendous resilience, battling back from 1-4 to take the first set and ultimately clinch the match for us.  Overall, it was a gritty, well-earned win that gives us real confidence heading into the conference tournament."
