KENNESAW, Ga. – The Diamond 'Dogs (24-17, 11-7 CUSA) have taken their third-straight CUSA series after downing Kennesaw State (17-19, 7-11 CUSA), 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Mickey Dunn Stadium in Kennesaw.
Both sides served two frames of no-hit baseball before the Bulldogs put up a three-spot in the third. A pair of swinging strikeouts led off the frame before
Colby Lunsford ripped a base hit up the middle and off the shoulder of the Owl pitcher.
Trey Hawsey then delivered his team-leading 11th homer of the season over the right field wall over 420 feet, giving the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead. It was the Bulldog first baseman's sixth homer to travel over 400 feet.
Colton Coates then drove a triple to center, getting three bags after the KSU center fielder dove and missed the catch, allowing the ball to roll deep into the outfield.
Eli Berch capped off the frame with an RBI knock, driving in his 12th run of the season.
Landon Fontenot saw a career-high five scoreless innings in his seventh start of the season. He allowed no hits and five walks while punching out seven batters.
Luke Nichols carried the no-hitter into the seventh inning before the Owls got their first hit on a leadoff triple. A sac fly gave the home side their first run of the day, but a pair of strikeouts from Nichols ended the frame to prevent additional damage.
The 'Dogs managed just three hits from the fourth to the seventh before back-to-back one-out knocks from
Matt Houston and
Cade Patterson broke up KSU's streak of hitless innings.
The Owls picked up their second hit of the day in the eighth with a one-out double deflected off of Hawsey's glove before tying it with a two-run homer the next at-bat.
LA Tech responded by leading off the ninth with a base hit delivered by
Wesley Scott, giving the 'Dogs the go-ahead run on base.
McCann Libby was then hit by a pitch the following at-bat before a one-out four-pitch walk was drawn by Hawsey to load the bases.
After drawing a 2-2 count, Coates ripped a pitch just deep enough to right field to allow Scott to score from third and give the 'Dogs a one-run lead.
A two-out walk in the bottom half put the tying run on base for the Owls, but a diving catch by Scott in left saved the run from scoring and secured the series victory.
It was the Bulldogs' third consecutive series win in CUSA play and have won seven of their last nine league contests. Hawsey and Scott picked up the lone multi-hit performances on Sunday, with Hawsey notching his 30th career multi-hit performance for the outright most among active Bulldogs.
KSU's three hits are tied for the second-lowest hits allowed by the 'Dogs in a win this season. Tech has four-straight games now with at least 10 hits and have notched double-digit hits in seven of their last eight contests.

Head Coach Lane Burroughs:
"It was a great play by
Wesley Scott in left, my heart rate is still going at 1,000 beats per minute. It was a big win on the road to win the series. We've rode
Thomas Allen pretty hard, and to ask him to get six outs after coming in Friday night it's asking a lot of the young man, but he got it done. He left the ball up on the one at-bat and credit to their hitter, the guy drove it out of the park to tie the game. It was not an offensive day—the wind was howling in, but it was blowing out to right field. We were fortunate that Trey got one as well, and then
Colton Coates with a big swing. We didn't get the bunt down in the ninth to advance the runners, but we ended up in the same position we'd be in anyways. They walked Hawsey and it was going to be on Coates to get it done, and he did with two strikes on him. And then
Thomas Allen goes out, and Wesley makes a great play with a runner on. I just couldn't be prouder of this team. To win three-straight series and get two of them on the road, it's huge. You don't like to say any game is a must-win, but we had to win this one today. Our guys found a way to get it done and gutted it out, and I'm very proud of them."
