In Johnson's sophomore season at UTPA, the Broncs finished 20-8. In his senior season, Johnson led the team in scoring, field goal percentage and free throw percentage. Johnson was named a First Team All-American South Conference selection in 1988 after leading the league and finishing seventh nationally in three-point field goal percentage.
After receiving a marketing degree from UTPA in 1988, Johnson headed overseas to Liecester, England to play for the Liecester Riders. Following that initial season in Europe, Johnson returned to the states to serve as an assistant coach at Northwestern state in 1989. In 1990, Johnson returned to England to become player/head coach for the Oldham Celtics. Johnson averaged 33 points per game for Oldham and led the Celtics to a league championship in 1992 with a record of 25-1.Â
Johnson returned to his alma mater in 1993 to receive his teaching certification before becoming an assistant coach at Bryan High School in Bryan, Texas. In 1996, Johnson returned to the collegiate coaching ranks, becoming an assistant coach at Texas-Pan American before moving on to Centenary as an assistant and then head coach.
