Bulldogs Begin Spring Drills

Forty-nine lettermen and 17 starters off last year's squad returned to the field and began preparing for the upcoming year, one that will be Louisiana Tech's first in the Western Athletic Conference. "We practiced with no pads today so there was a lot of teaching and individual work going on," Bicknell said. "Obviously we are excited about starting, and you could tell the players were eager to begin."
Bicknell and company look to rebound from a 2000 campaign that saw the Bulldogs post a 3-9 mark. However, the third year boss is confident that 2001 will be a different year.
"We are excited about a lot of the new guys we have in camp and a lot of the new recruits that will come in the fall," Bicknell said. "We have a lot of talent on this field right now, we just have to keep from turning the football over 44 times."
Although the Bulldogs will have to replace two of the school's all-time reception leaders in the departed James Jordan and Sean Cangelosi, plenty of weapons remain in tact on the offensive side of the football. One of the more anticipated battles will be behind center where record-setting sophomore to be Luke McCown and last year's opening game starter Brian Stallworth are one-two on the depth chart.
"Both Luke and Brian will get equal repetitions during the spring," Bicknell said. "Based on last year I would have to give the nod to Luke, but Brian will have ample opportunity to prove himself."
Tech will return to the practice field Tuesday while the spring game is tentatively slated for April 10.
