Ford, Obaze Lead Techsters Past Hawaii

Box Score Updated Jan 12, 2003 15:56:17 Ford, Obaze Lead Techsters Past Hawaii

RUSTON - Hawaii head coach Vince Goo is tired of seeing Louisiana Tech's Cheryl Ford and Amber Obaze.

Goo watched the pair torch his Rainbow Wahine again Saturday night as Obaze scored 18 points and Ford added 17 points and 14 rebounds as the Lady Techsters (10-2, 3-0) downed Hawaii 60-52 at the Thomas Assembly Center.

In Tech's three wins against Hawaii last season Ford averaged 18.7 points and 14 rebounds and Obaze averaged 17.0 points..

"I felt the need to create from the outside because in practice we knew they were going to pack it in on the inside," said Obaze, who hit 9 of 13 field goals on the night. "We had to start are offense on the outside to make Hawaii come out a little bit."

Obaze scored 12 first half points to lead Tech to a 33-22 halftime lead, while Ford scored six early second half points to help the Lady Techsters build a 45-24 lead with 14:06 left in the game. However, despite Ford recording her fourth straight double double of the year, the Summerfield, La., native gave credit to Obaze and the Tech guards.

"Teams have been doubling and tripling down on Trina and I so the guards have been staying in after practice to work on their outside shot, and it showed tonight," Ford said. "I think I played alright tonight. We played good as a team."

With Tech holding what looked to be a commanding 21-point lead, Hawaii got hot offensively as the Rainbow Wahine went on a 24-8 run to close the gap to 53-48 with 3:52 remaining. Sophomore guard Erica Smith's three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:57 remaining gave the Lady Techsters a 60-50 lead, which Hawaii couldn't overcome.

"Hawaii is a hard team to pull away from," said Tech head coach Kurt Budke. "And we did, and then we relaxed. Hopefully, we learned a lesson about playing against a good team with a lead. You can't relax because it is hard to get going again."

On the night, Tech hit 42 percent (25-60) of its field goals while limiting Hawaii to 37 percent (19-52) and outrebounding the Rainbow Wahine 43-28. Trina Frierson grabbed 13 rebounds and added eight points for the Techsters.

Jade Abele led Hawaii with 19 points and five rebounds.

Tech returns to action Thursday when the Lady Techsters travel to Reno to face Nevada.
