Techster Defense Shuts Down San Jose State, 83-38
RUSTON - Louisiana Tech knew it needed to shut down Cricket Williams in order to defeat San Jose State.
However, head coach Kurt Budke's crew decided to shut down the entire Spartan team Thursday night as the 12th ranked Lady Techsters (9-2, 2-0) dominated San Jose State 83-38 before 3,162 fans at the Thomas Assembly Center.
Tech limited the Spartans, who entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the WAC in offense, to only 28 percent from the field and a season-low in points with its tenacious and relentless man to man defense.
"I thought we played good team defense," Budke said. "We challenged our point guards and our entire team tonight. I am very proud of what they did against this team. I thought we did a good job of challenging every shot."
Tech used the point guard by committee of Tamaka Clay and Tasha Crain to harass Williams all night long, limiting the preseason first team all-conference selection to only 11 points on 5 of 14 shooting. The New Orleans, La., native entered the game second in the WAC at 19.5 points a game.
"I am very proud for what we did with Cricket tonight," Budke said. "She is a flat scorer. It's hard to hold her to 11. Every time they set a pick for her we helped out and road her out. It has to be a team effort in order to hold her to 11 points."
"We pressured her all night long all the way up the court," said junior guard Amber Obaze. "She probably isn't used to getting pressured that much. She got frustrated by it."
Offensively, Obaze sparked Tech, scoring 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting while also recording five rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes of action. The Dallas, Texas, native received a plaque from USA Basketball in a short pregame ceremony and then responded with her best shooting game of the year.
"Boy Amber looked good shooting the ball," Budke said. "Amber has been spending a whole lot of time after practice shooting extra shots. Her stroke was really good tonight."
Obaze, who has scored in double digits in six straight games and seven of the last eight, said the extra shots helped her confidence.
"I really found my touch tonight," Obaze said. "I have been working really hard after practice shooting extra shots and it paid off tonight."
Cheryl Ford added 13 points and 10 rebounds while Trina Frierson chipped in with 12 points. All 11 Tech players scored at least three points in the contest.
Tech dominated the boards, outrebounding San Jose State 64-33 while forcing 22 Spartan turnovers.
The Lady Techsters return to action Saturday night when they host Hawaii at 8 p.m. in a game televised on Fox Sports Southwest.
