Boxscore After watching a solid first-half lead evaporate against Jackson State Tuesday, Louisiana Tech was determined not to let it happen again in the second stanza.
The Bulldogs held off a second-half rally attempt by the Tigers as Louisiana Tech took a 75-61 win over JSU at the Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
Tech climbed to 3-3 with the win while Jackson State is now 1-7. The Bulldogs' 75-point scoring effort was a season-best for Tech.
After leading by as many as 16 points midway through the first half, a fiesty group of Tigers scatched and clawed their way back into the game, cutting the Bulldogs' advantage to 37-32 at intermission.
Tech again took control to start the second half, but again Jackson State tried to start a rally midway through the period. But a determined Tech squad refused to let JSU cut the Bulldogs' lead to single digits, and a thunderous dunk from
Paul Millsap with 5:28 remaining seemed to reignite the 'Dogs as they pulled away from the win.
"Our whole halftime talk was about the way we built that lead in the first half and let it get away by trying to do too much offensively and turning the ball over. In the second half we came out those first five minutes and scored and rebuilt the lead."
Millsap had gone through a quiet opening half with only four points and four rebounds at intermission. But the sophomore turned things up in the second half, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds.
All five Tech starters scored in double figures with
Corey Dean hitting for 15 points,
Daevon Haskins and
Wayne Powell chipping in with 12 points each and
Donell Allick adding 10 points.
Powell led Tech on the board with nine rebounds, all on the defensive end.
"Daevon played all 40 minutes, which is especially impressive with the way he broke their press for those whole 40 minutes," Richard said. "He played a key role."
Charlie White, who sparked JSU's late first-half surge with 10 points before intermission, topped the Tigers with 22 points.
The win was the sixth straight over Jackson State for the Bulldogs, who now hold a 7-2 advantage in the series.
Louisiana Tech returns to action on Sunday as the Bulldogs play a 4:30 contest at Texas-San Antonio.
