Southern Miss Snaps Tech Softballers' Four-Game Win Streak

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Updated Mar 19, 2004 11:28:21 Southern Miss Snaps Tech Softballers' Four-Game Win Streak

Southern Miss snapped the Lady Techster softball team?s four-game win streak with two one-run extra-inning wins over Tech, 3-4 and 5-6, in a double header at the Southern Miss Softball Complex Thursday.

Lindsey Meadows got the nod for the first contest and pitched 6 2/3 strong innings for the Techsters (12-13), giving up three runs (two earned) and six hits while striking out two batters. Coming into the game, Meadows had yet to give up a run or hit, as this game was a no decision for her.

Marla Pinkston (8-10) came in for relief of Meadows with two outs in the seventh inning and picked up the loss, as Southern Miss (14-14) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The international tiebreaker rule, which automatically places a runner on second base to begin the inning, was put into effect when the game entered extra innings. Tech could not take advantage of the extra runner, but Southern Miss did. The Lady Eagles placed Auriel Jenkins on second to begin the inning, Jenkins stole third base and then scored on a Sue Logan RBI bunt.

Brittany Stanley led Tech?s offense with three hits and two RBI, as the Lady Techsters belted nine hits as a team for the game. Amber Miles and Amiee Coleman each recorded two hits, followed by Bridget Broadnax?s and Mary Cohn?s one hit performance.

However, the Lady Techsters could not generate enough runs off of those hits, as Tech had seven runners left on base for the game.

In the second meeting of the evening, Pinkston struggled through seven innings of work before giving up the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth inning for the 5-6 loss to the Lady Eagles.

Pinkston has now only given up two earned runs in her last 37 1/3 innings, and only one of Southern Miss? six runs were earned in this contest, as two walks and two Lady Techster errors contributed to Lady Eagles runs.

Looking for revenge from the loss in the first contest, the Lady Techsters struck quickly with two runs in the first inning. Miles led off the game with a walk before Stanley laced a triple to right center field, scoring Miles. Ashley Palma then flied out to right field but gained the RBI on the sacrifice fly which scored Stanley.

Southern Miss responded with four runs in the bottom of the second inning before Coleman hit a three-run homer to right field in the fourth inning, scoring Cohn and LaRussa.

Tech took the lead into the seventh inning, when the Lady Eagles scored one run to tie the game before winning the game in the eighth inning.

The Lady Techsters look to bounce back from the two losses as they come home Saturday for a double header with the University of Texas-San Antonio. The first game begins at 2 p.m. with the second contest following at 4 p.m.
