Tech Softball Splits Home Double Header With Stephen F. Austin
A two-out two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the Lady Techster softball team 2-1 over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in game one of double-header action Wednesday night. However, Tech could not continue momentum into the second contest, as the Lady Techsters (13-15) fell 3-0 to S.F.A. in extra innings at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
The win snapped the Lady Techsters? four-game losing skid and upped freshman pitcher Kristen Blodgette?s record to 2-1 on the season, as Blodgette gave up only two hits and one run, along with five strikeouts, in 6 2/3 innings of work.
S.F.A. (16-18) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Carrie Woydziak and Chelsea Lundberg attempted a double steal from third and first bases. Lundberg was the first to take off, and, as Tech catcher Ashley Aycock gunned down Lundberg, Woydziak stole home.
Neither team scored for the next four innings, until the Lady Techsters? rally in the bottom of the sixth with two outs. Freshman Jessica Elson walked, and Nikki Ducey pinch ran for Elson. Jennifer LaRussa then singled to right field, advancing Ducey to third.
Then it was Bridget Broadnax who stepped up in the clutch to tie the game for the Techsters, as she singled to shortstop and earned the RBI on Ducey?s run scored. Leah Beasley came in to pinch run for LaRussa and scored the go ahead run when Casey Reiff reached on an error by S.F.A.?s shortstop Lee Lara.
And that is all the Lady Techsters would need, as Lindsey Meadows closed the game for Tech and earned her third save of the season.
Despite instant offense and a late, emotion rally from the Lady Techsters in the first game, Tech could not post any runs on the scoreboard in the second game, as Tech was blanked 3-0 in the extra-inning bout.
Sabra Warner (2-1) got her fourth start of the season and pitched a dandy for Tech, as she gave up only three hits with three strikeouts through the first seven innings of play. With the game going to extra innings, Meadows (0-1) came in for relief of Warner but never found a rhythm. S.F.A. rocked Meadows for four hits and three runs all in the eighth inning.
The Ladyjacks broke the scoreless knot in the eighth inning, as Tara Hersey started the inning with a double to left center field. Hersey advanced to third when Ragen Rutherford singled. Lundberg then poked a two-RBI double before she scored on a single by Lara. That scoring chain gave S.F.A. a 3-0 lead and ultimately the win.
Tech managed only five hits in the game, lead by Amber Miles? two hits in four at bats. Broadnax, Aycock and Mary Cohn recorded one hit each.
The Lady Techsters will open Western Athletic Conference play with a double header against the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane Saturday in Oklahoma.
