MONROE - Louisiana Tech broke a six-game losing streak against Louisiana-Monroe, downing the Lady Indians 9-6 Tuesday night at Lady Indian Field.
The Lady Techsters won their eighth game in the last 10 outings and improved to 21-24 on the season heading into Wednesday night's doubleheader at Southeastern Louisiana while UL-Monroe fell to 15-44.
Heading into the top of the fourth inning in a scoreless game, Tech exploded for six runs on six hits in the frame with the biggest two blows coming on a pair of two-run doubles by Bridget Broadnax and Ashley Cameron. With the Techsters leading 2-0 on an RBI single by Aimee Coleman and a bases-loaded walk by Amber Miles, Broadnax roped a double to center field, scoring Brittany Stanley and Miles.
Cameron followed with a two-run double to left center and Tech held what looked to be a commanding 6-0 advantage. However, UL-Monroe answered in its half of the fourth inning, scoring four runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lady Indian right fielder Carmen Buckles tripled to clear the bases and then scored on a throwing error by Tech, cutting the Lady Techster lead to 6-4.
"We had 14 hits so I was proud of what we did offensively," said Tech head coach Sarah Dawson. "After they scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut our lead down to two, I was proud of the way we answered right back. We are starting to get some confidence at the plate."
Tech answered quickly in the fifth inning. After Brittany Stanley singled and stole second, senior Casey Reiff singled her home and then scored two batters later on an RBI single by Cameron and the Techsters led 8-4.
UL-Monroe answered with one run in the fifth before the Techsters scored again in the top of the sixth on another RBI single by Reiff, scoring Coleman who had singled with one out in the inning.
The nine runs by Tech were the fourth most it has scored this season and the 14 hits was also one of the best outputs on the year.
Cameron led Tech with three hits while Stanley, Reiff, Broadnax, Erin Chernicky and Coleman each recorded two hits.
"We are doing a better job lately of swinging at the good pitches and laying off the bad ones," Dawson said. "These kids have continued to work hard in practice and the improvement you see is the result of that hard work."
Senior Marla Pinkston improved to 12-14 on the year with the win, hurling four innings while allowing four runs on six hits. Junior Lindsey Meadows earned her fourth save of the season, pitching the final three innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits.
