Tech Softball Splits at Hawaii
Boxscore
HONOLULU, Hawaii - Louisiana Tech split a pair of Western Athletic Conference games at Hawaii late Friday as the Lady Techsters downed the Rainbow Wahine 1-0 in the first game before falling 3-0 in the nightcap.
In game No. 1 Lady Techster sophomore second baseman Mary Cohn doubled home the games only run in the top of the sixth inning to lead Louisiana Tech (24-27, 7-6 WAC) to a 1-0 win over Hawaii (25-30, 7-11 WAC).
Cohn's hit scored senior shortstop Casey Reiff who had walked with one out in the inning. After sophomore third baseman Bridget Broadnax sacrificed Reiff to second, Cohn came through with the two-out knock.
Tech senior hurler Marla Pinkston (14-15) pitched brilliantly against the Rainbow Wahine, allowing only in infield single in the bottom of the sixth inning while recording her 14th win over the season. The Forney, Texas, native walked only one Hawaii batter in helping the Lady Techsters win their seventh straight Western Athletic Conference game of the year.
Cohn led Tech with two hits, while Amber Miles, Broadnax, and Jessica Elson each added one base hit. Miles recorded her WAC leading 22nd steal of the season.
Ironically, Pinkston pitched a 1-0 shutout against Tulsa in Tech's last contest as Cohn came through with the game-winning hit in that contest as well.
In the second game of the day, Hawaii pitcher Shannon Tabion (15-9) allowed only two hits and one walk while striking out eight Lady Techsters to lift the Rainbow Wahine to the victory.
Hawaii scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on a solo home run by catcher Denise Dahlberg, giving the home team an early 1-0 advantage. The game stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when first baseman Tyleen Tausaga led off with a solo home run over the center field wall upping the lead to 2-0. An RBI double by center fielder Jennifer Hackett scored the final run of the inning and of the game.
Cohn and Reiff recorded the only hits of the game for the Lady Techsters. Junior Lindsey Meadows picked up the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Tech and Hawaii will play a doubleheader today starting at 8 p.m. CST.
