Miles Sets Record; Techsters Fall Twice

Boxscore

FRESNO, Calif. - A four-run sixth inning lifted No. 14 ranked Fresno State to a 5-1 win over Louisiana Tech in game one of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep by the Bulldogs against the Lady Techsters late Thursday night in California.

Fresno State pitcher Laura Ferreira scattered eight hits in a complete-game 2-0 victory in the second contest of the night as the Bulldogs improved to 46-15, 19-1 in the WAC while Tech fell to 25-31, 8-9 in league play.

The silver lining for Tech in the two losses was the fact that junior centerfielder Amber Miles broke an 18-year-old Lady Techster record as the DeSoto, Texas, native registered three hits in the two games, giving her 64 for the season. Miles' total breaks Faith Holman's school record of 63 set back during the 1986 season.

Louisiana Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third of game No. 1. Miles singled with one out and advanced to second on a groundout by Brittany Stanley. With two outs in the frame, shortstop Casey Reiff reached on an error which allowed Miles to advance to third and sophomore Bridget Broadnax promptly drove home the first run of the game with an RBI single through the left side.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Fresno State tied the game on an RBI groundout by Jamie Southern. The Bulldogs then pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, the big blow coming on a two-out, three-run home run by WAC Player of the Year candidate Christina Clark.

Miles and Broadnax each recorded two hits in the game while Stanley added one. Senior pitcher Marla Pinkston picked up the loss, allowing eight hits, four walks and five earned runs in six innings of work.

In the second contest of the night, Louisiana Tech outhit Fresno State 8-5 but couldn't plate a run while the Bulldogs managed to scratch for one run in both the first and third innings.

The contest started with Miles recording her record-breaking 64th hit of the year. In the bottom of the first, Fresno State scratched for an unearned run off Tech starter Kristin Blodgette as Southern scored with two outs on a fielding error by the Lady Techsters.

The Bulldogs increased their lead to 2-0 in the third. Clark led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single by Southern. One out later, Clark scored on an RBI groundout by Lori Hoffman.

Tech's best scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth when three of the first four hitters singled but Broadnax was thrown out at home trying to score from second on a single by Mary Cohn before Fresno State retired the final batter with a strike out.

The Lady Techsters return to action Saturday in a doubleheader against Nevada that starts at 4 p.m.
