Boxscore
RENO, Nevada - Candice Rainwater hit a one-out game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Nevada a 6-5 win over Louisiana Tech in the first game of a Wolfpack sweep against the Lady Techsters Saturday.
Nevada (37-27, 12-10) recorded 14 hits in the nightcap downing Tech 7-3 to take a two-game lead over the Lady Techsters (25-33, 8-11) in the race for third place in the Western Athletic Conference standings.
Tech closes out its season with a pair of important league home doubleheaders this week, hosting UTEP Thursday at 6 p.m. and San Jose State Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Lady Techsters jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of game No. 1 on a two-out, two-run home run by sophomore Bridget Broadnax, her team-leading fourth of the season.
However, Nevada answered quickly with two runs in the first and three more in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Techster starter Kristin Blodgette surrendered all five runs on six hits and two walks before giving way to senior Marla Pinkston with no outs in the bottom of the second.
Tech chipped away at the Nevada three run lead, scoring one run in the top halves of the third, fourth and seventh innings to send the game into extra frames. Trailing 5-4 heading into the top of the seventh, Broadnax started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by sophomore Mary Cohn. After a groundout, freshman Christine Echols singled home the tying run.
The Techsters loaded the bases in the top of the eighth inning but couldn't score. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Brittany Lorenzen walked before Pinkston was relieved by junior Lindsey Meadows. After a passed ball allowed Lorenzen to advance to second, Rainwater doubled home the winning run.
Junior Brittany Stanley led Tech with three hits and two runs scored, while Amber Miles, Broadnax, Cohn and Aimee Coleman each registered two hits. Pinkston picked up the loss despite surrendering only six hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of work.
In game No. 2 Nevada jumped out to a commanding 5-0 lead after three innings as Tech starter Lindsey Meadows allowed the five runs, only three earned, on six hits and two walks in three innings of work.
After Nevada upped its lead to 7-0 with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, Tech struck via a three-run home run by senior Jen LaRussa, her first of the season. However, it was too little, too late as Tech fell for the sixth straight game.
