BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Louisiana Tech swept a pair of games in the first day of the Birmingham Southern Invitational Softball Tournament Friday at BSC Softball Park.

Tech downed Mississippi Valley State 4-2 in the first game of the day before coming back to defeat Appalachian State 6-0.

With the game against MVSU tied at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Tech senior Brittany Stanley reached on an infield single with one out and advanced to second on a throwing error by the shortstop.

Freshman second baseman Rochelle Sandberg followed with a game-ending two-run home run over the left field wall off Mississippi Valley pitcher Jalana Brown, the third home run of the season for Sandberg.

After Mississippi Valley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, Tech tied the game up with a leadoff home run by Ashley Cameron in the bottom half of the inning. Tech took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single by Cameron, scoring Sandberg.

Cameron and Sandberg both recorded two hits while Stanley, Meadows, Regan Clark, and Amber Miles registered one hit.

Lindsey Meadows (7-9) picked up the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out a career-high 12 batters.

In the second contest of the day, Tech scored a lone run in the top of the first inning on an RBI sacrifice fly by Sandberg that scored Stanley, who led the frame off with a triple.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the sixth inning when Tech added three runs on four hits. After Stanley and Sandberg registered back to back singles to lead the inning off, Cameron singled home Stanley to give Tech a 2-0 lead. Miles followed with at two-out, two-run scoring double.

Tech added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Jessica Elson and an RBI single by Stanley.

Meadows (8-9) registered her second win of the day, allowing zero runs on four hits and one walk in the complete-game victory.
