NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin swept a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech Wednesday at Coy Simms Complex downing the Lady Techsters 6-5 in eight innings and 3-1 in the nightcap.
Tied 4-4 heading into the top of the eighth inning of game No. 1, Tech (16-22) took a 5-4 lead on an RBI groundout by first baseman Carly White that scored outfielder Ashley Cameron.
However, SFA (11-19) answered in their half of the frame. With one out and a runner on second base, Ladyjack catche Lee Lara doubled home the tying run. One out later, third baseman Ragen Rutherford doubled home the game-winning run as SFA downed Tech 6-5.
Lindsey Meadows (12-15) picked up the loss for Tech, allowing six runs - five earned - on 10 hits and four walks in 7.2 innings of work.
Shortstop Jessica Elson led Tech offensively, going 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. Catcher Regan Clark added two hits and scored two runs for the Techsters.
In the nightcap, Tech took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning against Stephen F. Austin but couldn't muster any more offense in dropping its fifth straight game.
Senior outfielder Amber Miles led the inning off with a single and scored on an error by the SFA first baseman, giving Tech an early 1-0 advantage.
The Ladyjacks tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout by first baseman Tara Hersey.
The game remained 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Stephen F. Austin added two more runs on only one hit and one Tech error.
With runners on second and third and two outs, pinch runner Kelsey Boland gave SFA a 2-1 lead by scoring on a wild pitch from freshman Leslie Aycock. The Ladyjacks increased the lead to 3-1 when Lara - who had advanced to third on the wild pitch - scored on an error by the Techsters infield.
SFA pitchers retired the final 11 Tech batters in order to seal the victory.
Aycock (3-3) picked up the loss, allowing two runs - one earned - on two hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of relief. Tech starter Kristin Rupp hurled the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits and four walks.
Miles, Clark, Elson, White and Sandy Carroll each registered one hit for Tech.
The Lady Techsters will open Western Athletic Conference play Friday at 5 p.m. with a home doubleheader against UTEP. The three-game series will wrap up Saturday with a 2 p.m. single game.
