UL-Lafayette Downs Tech Twice
LAFAYETTE, La. -- Sixth-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette swept a softball doubleheader Saturday downing Louisiana Tech 8-1 and 11-0 at Ragin Cajuns Park.
Tech (8-13) fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning of game No. 1 with the big blast being a two-run home run off the bat of UL-Lafayette Joy Webre.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the fifth inning, Louisiana Tech plated its only run of the day on an run scoring single by freshman Regan Clark, scoring Amber Miles. Miles had led the inning off with a walk and stolen second base to set up the run. Clark's hit was the only one of the game for Tech.
The score remained 4-1 until UL-Lafayette scored four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Brooke Mitchell picked up the win for the Ragin Cajuns, allowing no hits and four walks while striking out 11 batters in four innings of work. Lindsey Meadows (5-8) picked up the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings of action.
UL-Lafayette scored four runs in the first and five more in the second to jump out to a 9-0 lead in the second game of the day. Once again the Lady Techsters managed only one hit -- a leadoff single by sophomore Ashley Cameron in the second inning -- as three Ragin Cajun pitchers combined to toss five innings of one-hit ball.
Junior Kristin Rupp (1-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing nine runs -- seven earned -- on six hits and three walks in only 1.1 innings of action. Meadows came on in relief and pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing two runs -- one earned -- on three hits and one walk.
Tech opens the home portion of its 2005 schedule against Southeastern Louisiana March 9 at 4 p.m. at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
