RUSTON ? Amber Miles one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh inning set the stage for freshman Rochelle Sandberg?s heroics as Louisiana Tech defeated UTEP 2-1 at the Lady Techster Softball Complex Saturday afternoon.

Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Miles roped a 3-2 pitch over the head of the UTEP rightfielder and raced to third base with her first triple of the season.

Sandberg then lined an 0-2 pitch off the left field wall, scoring Miles, breaking the Lady Techsters (17-24, 1-2 WAC) seven game losing streak and salvaging one win in the three-games Western Athletic Conference series against the Miners (14-23, 2-1 WAC).

With the game-winning hit, Sandberg also redeemed herself as her fifth inning error led to the only run of the contest for the Miners.

Offense proved hard to come by in the contest as Techster ace Lindsey Meadows and UTEP hurler Megan Barber battled all afternoon long.

UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the contest in the top of the fifth inning, scoring a two-out unearned run. After UTEP led the inning off with consecutive singles, Meadows retired the next two batters.

However, UTEP?s Ashley Bennett then hit a routine grounder to Sandberg who bobbled the ball before throwing it away, allowing the Miners to score their only run of the game.

Tech tied the contest in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ashley Cameron blooped a one-out single over the first baseman?s head and Regan Clark then followed with a walk.

Meadows then lined a single up the middle which scored Cameron just ahead of the throw by the UTEP centerfielder.

Meadows (13-16) picked up the win, allowing only one unearned run on five hits and two walks while striking out nine UTEP batters in the complete game effort. Barber (7-11) was the tough luck loser, allowing two runs on six hits and two walks.

Meadows led Tech?s offensive attack with two hits while Miles, Sandberg, Jessica Elson and Cameron each added on hit.

Tech returns to action Tuesday in a 6 p.m. contest against Louisiana-Monroe at the Lady Techster Softball Complex.
