Boxscore
THIBODAUX, La. ? Jacksonville State scored two runs in the bottom half of the fourth and fifth innings to post a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Louisiana Tech Saturday in the first game of the Nicholls State Mardi Gras Mambo Tournament.
Tech scored one run in the top half of the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-0 lead before Jacksonville State mounted its comeback.
?I liked the fact we jumped out on top,? said Tech head coach Sarah Dawson. ?However, we needed to continue to add to the lead, but we didn?t. Defensively, we were one error away from being where we needed to be.?
Tech (4-8) led 3-2 heading into the bottom half of the fifth inning before the Lady Techsters only error of the contest opened the door. With one man on and two outs, an infield error by Tech led to the game-tying run scoring from second before the next Jacksonville State batter singled home the eventual go ahead run.
Freshman Courtney Avery (1-3) picked up the hard-luck loss, allowing only six hits and four runs ? two earned ? in 4.2 innings of work in the start.
?I thought Courtney did a good job of keeping Jacksonville State?s hitters off balance,? Dawson said. ?They are a good team. She had one walk too many which hurt us but besides that I felt she pitched well.?
Offensively, Tech scored an unearned run in the first inning as freshman Emma Barnes scored on an error by Jacksonville State. Tech junior Jessica Elson singled home pinch runner Lindsey McIlwain in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Lady Techsters a 2-0 lead.
Tech?s final run of the game came in the fourth inning as Ashley Cameron scored on an RBI single by Carly White.
Barnes, Rochelle Sandberg, Regan Clark, Cameron, White and Elson all registered one hit for Tech in the loss.
In the second game of the day for Tech, the Lady Techsters were leading Nicholls State 3-2 in the bottom half of the sixth inning when the game was postponed due to heavy rains. It will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday.
Tech will also play two more games Sunday ? one against both Jacksonville State and Nicholls State ? weather permitting.
