ARLINGTON ? After falling 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader, Louisiana Tech answered back taking an early lead and capitalizing on several scoring opportunities for a 6-4 victory over the University of Texas-Arlington in game two Wednesday at Allan Saxe Field.
?In the second game we challenged the girls to be aggressive early in the count, and they did that,? said head coach Sarah Dawson. ?It was also good for us to hit with runners in scoring position, which was an area we have been lacking in lately.?
Tech (8-18) jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the top of the first. An RBI single by junior outfielder Ashley Cameron started the scoring rally, followed by a fielder?s choice and RBI by sophomore catcher Regan Clark and an RBI single by junior first baseman Carly White.
The Mavericks (17-11) answered back quickly by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI double and an RBI single.
The contest proved to be a battle as both teams went back and forth scoring runs in multiple innings. UTA cranked out 13 hits but fell short of the win, while Tech used six hits to walk away with the victory.
Junior Christine Echols, who picked up her first homerun of the season, led the Techsters with two runs on two hits and one RBI. Freshman outfielder Emma Barnes, Cameron, White and freshman outfielder Andrea Gardner all contributed one hit each.
Senior pitcher Kristin Rupp (1-3) was credited with the win after seven innings of work, allowing four runs on 13 hits.
?When we do all of the things we talk about we need to do ? pitching, playing defense well and hitting ? we?re a good team across the board,? Dawson said.
The Techsters fell short in the first game as UTA pitcher Jill Garro tossed a one-hit shutout to lift the Mavericks 2-0. Tech?s only hit of the contest came in the first inning when Barnes singled.
An RBI double by UTA?s Autumn Petrino, coupled with a homerun by Deejay Nelson, led the Mavericks to the win.
Freshman Krissi Oliver (2-7) was credited with the loss after five innings of work, allowing two runs on seven hits, issuing one walk and giving up one homerun, while striking out one.
?We have to continue to perform well at each aspect of the game if we expect to win,? Dawson said. ?And hopefully the win in this last game will get the team fired up and build more confidence when we face our upcoming competition in conference.?
The Techsters return to Western Athletic Conference action Friday in Las Cruces, New Mexico when they face New Mexico State in a doubleheader.
