RUSTON ? Louisiana Tech head coach Chris Long hopes to see some marked improvement from his team Thursday night at 7 p.m. when the Lady Techsters play their final exhibition game of the season.
Long and Co. will be facing a team comprised of former Louisiana Tech letter-winners coached by legendary Hall of Famer Leon Barmore.
?I?m excited,? Long said. ?It?s going to be fun for the fans having Coach Barmore on the sideline and having these former players on the new floor for the first time. I hope our fans turn out to support our team and the former players who are making a special effort to come back for the game.?
Barmore?s roster will include guard LaQuan Stallworth, guard Shantel Hardison, forward Amanda Wilson, guard Catina Malone, center Takeisha Lewis, guard Kendra Neal, guard Katie Cochran Hall, guard Pam Thomas, guard Monica Maxwell and former Northwestern State forward Pam Hudson.
Barmore said he is looking forward to reuniting with his former players and stepping on the Thomas Assembly Center floor one more time.
?I really am,? Barmore said. ?Everyone on that floor will be Lady Techsters in some way, whether current players or former. We?re all in this together, trying to have a program we are all proud of. In some small way this is something I can do to help.
?I have a mindset that I wish I could more to help, and this is something that maybe helps and maybe becomes an annual thing. I want everyone to have a good time. From all the players I?ve talked to who are coming back, I can?t tell you how excited they are. It?s a night that if you love the lady Techters, you should come out.?
Long knows that facing this talented group of former Techster players will be a much bigger challenge for his basketball team, which defeated an out-manned Dillard squad 88-51 in the first exhibition game of the season.
?This team will have a lot more size than Dillard did,? Long said. ?They are not going to have a lot of time to practice, but there?s going to be some good individual players on the floor. We are going to have to defend better than we did against Dillard. On the offensive end, it?s about execution. It?s not so much about what the other team does, it?s about how we execute.?
Although Tech held Dillard to only 30 percent shooting in the win a week ago, the Lady Techsters did surrender 17 offensive rebounds and allowed Dillard to hit 41 percent of its shots in the second half.
?The biggest thing I want to see is us get better on defensive end,? Long said. ?We held Dillard to low percentage but made a lot of mistakes in first game. We will be going up against better talent than we did in first game. They will expose us some. It?s about getting better, and it?s about (our season opener). That?s what I?m concerned with, getting ourselves prepared to play Western Kentucky.?
Tech opens regular season play Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in Bowling Green against the Lady Toppers.
