MONROE, La. ? Louisiana Tech scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to down Mississippi Valley State 7-4 Saturday afternoon at the Louisiana-Monroe Mardi Gras Classic at Warhawk Softball Complex.
With the two teams tied at 3-3 entering the frame, Tech (7-2) plated four runs on four hits and two Devilette errors. Rochelle Sandberg?s infield single scored Danielle Sheridan who singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, giving the Lady Techsters a 4-3 lead.
Ashley Cameron singled down the left field line, scoring Sandberg and giving Tech a 5-3 lead. Freshman third baseman Summer Young followed with her first collegiate home run, a two-run blast over the left centerfield fence and Tech led 7-3.
Mississippi Valley State scored one unearned run in the bottom half of the seventh but freshman starter Mandi Bertsch retired the Devilettes, earning her third win of the year against only one loss.
Bertsch (3-1) allowed four runs ? two earned ? in seven innings of action while allowing eight hits and two walks and striking out eight.
Carly White led Tech?s 14-hit attack with three hits, while Sandberg, Regan Clark, Cameron and Young each added two hits. Clark and Cameron used back to back home runs in the top of the second inning to give Tech an early 2-0 lead.
With Tech leading 3-1 through three innings, Mississippi Valley State scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the contest at 3-3 and set up the seventh inning heroics by the Lady Techsters.
With the win, Tech earned the No. 2 seed in the single elimination portion of the tournament and will face No. 3 seed McNeese State at 4:30 p.m. today.
