Techsters Sweep UTA in Softball Action

RUSTON ? Junior Regan Clark?s two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh inning led Louisiana Tech to a 6-5 come-from-behind win in game No. 1 of a doubleheader sweep over Texas Arlington Wednesday afternoon.

Tech (9-4) won game No. 2 against the Mavs 5-1 behind a strong pitching performance from freshman hurler Mandi Bertsch (4-1).

However, the story of the afternoon was Louisiana Tech?s three-run seventh inning in game No. 1 as head coach Sarah Dawson said she was proud of her team?s never-say-die mentality.

?Our girls needed a little wake up call in the middle of the first game,? Dawson said. ?They responded. We took the lead in the sixth inning, and then had to come from behind again in the bottom of the seventh to win it. That?s what I?m most proud of I think. We laid it on the line.?

Tech took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by Clark and a run-scoring single by freshman Kylie Bassett.

However, UTA (5-7) responded by scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning against Tech starter Krissi Oliver, regaining a 5-3 advantage.

Tech answered in the bottom half of the frame. The Lady Techsters loaded the bases with no body out thanks to a single, a UTA error and a walk. After Oliver scored from third base on a passed ball to make the score 5-4, Rochelle Sandberg drove home the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly.

Clark followed with the game-winning single up the middle as Tech completed the rally for the victory.

Oliver (5-2) picked up the win, allowing five runs ? four earned ? on nine hits and three walks in the complete game victory.

?It took a resilient performance by Krissi,? Dawson said. ?Texas-Arlington hit her hard, but she managed to get some big outs. Our defense made plays to keep us in the game and our bats finally came around. I?m proud of the girls for making the adjustments.?

Emma Barnes, Summer Young and Oliver led Tech offensively with two hits each while Clark added two RBI.

Bertsch?s pitching performance was the key to game No. 2 on the day as the freshman scattered four hits while walking zero and striking out five.

?I?m very excited for Mandi,? Dawson said. ?She has struggled with her control the last couple of outings, but today she hit her spots and ended up being very successful. They only hit one ball hard off of her. She was very deceptive with her pitches.?

Bassett?s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning gave Tech an early 1-0 lead over the Mavs before UTA?s Dee Jay Nelson homered in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game up.

Clark gave the Lady Techsters a 2-1 lead with a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring Danielle Sheridan from first base.

Tech added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Emma Barnes? two-out, two-run single was the big hit of the frame.

Clark registered two hits for Tech in the nightcap, while Barnes, Sheridan, Sandberg, Carly White and Amberly Waits each registered one.

Tech returns to action Friday when it faces Top 25 LSU at 5:45 in the first game of the LSU Tournament in Baton Rouge.
