Walk-Off Home Run Lifts Techsters to Split
Boxscore I Boxscore II
RUSTON ? Freshman Amberly Waits? two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Louisiana Tech to a 4-2 win over San Jose State and a split of a softball doubleheader at the Lady Techster Softball Complex Saturday.
San Jose State prevailed in the first game of the day 9-0 and won the three-game series two-games-to-one.
Waits game-winning home run ? only her second long ball of the season ? came with one out and a runner on first base after Danielle Sheridan led the frame off with a single to right field.
?Amberly is one person who is an example of what we are trying to get all of our players to do,? said head coach Sarah Dawson. ?She doesn?t allow one bad plate appearance to affect her next one. She has also struggled at times in the field this year but she still wants the ball hit to her. That?s the type of mentality we want all of our players to possess.?
Tech (20-22, 3-6 WAC) trailed 1-0 in the contest after San Jose State scored one run on five hits in the top of the third inning. However, the Lady Techsters tied the game at 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Summer Young double to right centerfielder scoring pinch runner Lyndsey McIlwain from second base.
Tech took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Ashley Cameron scored with two outs on a throwing error by the San Jose State second baseman.
However, the Spartans (18-19, 3-6) answered in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a passed ball before Tech starter Krissi Oliver retired the final two San Jose State batters with a runner on third to preserve the tie.
Oliver (15-15) picked up the win for Tech, allowing two runs ? one earned ? on nine hits and no walks in the complete-game victory.
Waits and Sheridan led Tech with two hits each.
In game No. 1 of the day, San Jose State exploded in the final three innings to down Louisiana Tech 9-0.
The game was tied at 0-0 through three innings of action before the Spartans scored two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and three more in the sixth off Tech starter Mandi Bertsch.
Dawson said despite her team?s disappointing showing in the first game of the day, she was proud of their ability to win game No. 2.
?It does show our resilience to be able to come back,? Dawson said. ?We?ve played well at home so it stung a little bit (to lose twice). I think we felt urgency and took the attitude that we weren?t going to allow them to sweep us. Pride does have a lot to do with that.?
Rochelle Sandberg registered the only hit of the game for Tech off San Jose State starter Kelly Harrison.
Tech returns to action Tuesday when the Lady Techsters hosts McNeese State at 4 p.m. for a doubledheader.
