Boxscore NATCHITOCHES, La. ? Despite the best offensive effort of the season so far by the Lady Techsters, Northwestern State was able to find the back of the net three times in a 3-0 victory for the Demons. Louisiana Tech remains winless and scoreless on the season while Northwestern State picked up its initial victory at the Demon Soccer Complex on Wednesday night.
?I think our confidence is low right now, and that shows in front of the goal,? head coach
Kevin Sherry said. ?It?s almost like we?re afraid to score. We need to get our confidence back up before we can be successful. We actually had the better scoring chances, but our shots just didn?t go in. Their only shots of note went in, and then they had the penalty kick. I thought
Brooke Lanie,
Kiva Gresham,
Leslie Buck and
Amy Wolsted were outstanding, and they will be key for us as the season progresses.?
The Demons ended their scoreless streak in the 13th minute of the match when a Demon was fouled just inside the right corner of the penalty box, resulting in a penalty kick for NSU. Hannah Casey converted the attempt to give the Demons a 1-0 lead.
Tech had maybe its best scoring opportunity of the season thus far when Wolsted and
Denise Wilson broke free from a pack of Northwestern defenders. But NSU keeper Johnna Klohocker got a hand on Wilson?s attempt, sending it wide. Neither team would seriously threaten the rest of the opening stanza, and Northwestern State took a 1-0 lead to the half.
The Techsters had an even better chance early in the second period.
Erika Rautio drilled an attempt right into the NSU keeper?s arms, but she failed to corral it. Rautio followed up with a blast right at the open net, but a Demon defender was able to stop it just inches short of the goal line.
Just a couple of minutes later at the 48:14 mark, Tech appeared to score its first goal of the season following a free kick just outside the box, but the Techsters were ruled offside.
Freshman Gresham had a great look in the 68th minute, but her attempt sailed wide right.
NSU padded its lead when Megan Hunter took a great cross from Callie Hayes and put it past Gavlak at the 70:20 mark, giving the Demons a 2-0 lead.
The Demons added one more for good measure in the closing minutes of the game as NSU?s Rose Lawrence lofted a beautiful shot just out of the reach of
Nicole Didier, making the score 3-0 in favor of NSU.
Gresham and
Savanna Russo both had shots on goal in the 88th minute, but Klohocker got a hand on both of them, keeping the shutout intact.
The Lady Techsters will hit the road once again on Sunday when they travel to face Southeastern Louisiana. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m.
