Techsters Tied SJSU 1-1

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- For the fourth time in five Western Athletic Conference games, Louisiana Tech (10-3-5) came away with a tie and a point as the Lady Techsters and San Jose State ended in a 1-1 score Friday afternoon.

The two teams entered the game tied for sixth place in the league standings and the game could have been a huge swing for either team with a win as only the top six teams in the WAC earn a berth into the conference tournament.

However, nothing changed as both teams earned a point and increased their total points to four in league action.

"It's really amazing," said Tech head coach Kevin Sherry. "It shows we are competitive and that is a good sign.

"The kids fought hard. We conceded a goal early but got it back. After that, we really had the better chances but we just lacked the person to put the ball into the net. Scotti (Culton) had a shot from seven yards out in overtime that the (San Jose State) goalkeeper made an incredible save on. It was amazing. We should have had the win but that's the way it goes."

The Spartans took an early lead on a goal by Emmy Belding in the 20th minute of the game. The goal came on a through ball that Belding shot from the right corner into the upper left hand corner of the net as SJSU grabbed the early advantage.

However, Tech answered in the 26th minute on a corner kick as Amy Wolsted recorded her third goal of the season.

"It was a corner kick that they didn't clear," Sherry said. "It came to Amy on the edge of the penalty area and she one-timed it into the corner. It was a nice goal."

Neither team scored in the final 65 minutes of regulation or either of the two, 10-minute overtime periods.

Tech outshot San Jose State 20-12 with 13 of the Lady Techsters shots being on goal.

The Lady Techsters will face Hawaii Sunday at 10 p.m. CST.

"Hawaii is one of the top two teams in this league along with Utah State," Sherry said. "They are athletic and talented and on their home turf with a very supportive crowd it will be a challenge. It will be a great learning experience. We continue to build on the future and I think we have set the stage for future years."
