RUSTON - Freshman Ashley Brignac pitched a complete game one-hit shutout to lead 24th ranked UL-Lafayette to a 13-0 win over Louisiana Tech in the season opener for the Lady Techsters.
Brignac, who led the USA Softball Junior National team to the gold medal at the 2007 World Championship, was overpowering in her collegiate debut, striking out 10 batters and walking none in an impressive five innings of work.
Tech junior Krissi Oliver wasn't as impressive in her season debut, picking up the loss while allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and three walks in 2.1 innings of work.
Freshman Wanda Malone came on in relief of Oliver in the bottom of the third inning, and allowed five earned runs on five hits and three walks in 1.2 innings of action.
Offensively, Tech registered only one base runner in the game as senior catcher Regan Clark registered a single off of Brignac leading off the top of the second inning.
UL-Lafayette, who defeated UL-Monroe 6-0 in the first game of the day at the Louisiana Tech Invitational, scored one run in the first, four in the second, six in the third and two in the fourth in the victory.
Vanessa Soto led the Ragin Cajuns with three hits and five RBI while Holly Tankersley drove in three runs with one hit and Melissa Verde added three RBI on three hits.
