RUSTON - With a pair of wins over northern Louisiana rivals on Wednesday night at Joe Aillet Stadium, the Lady Techster soccer team moved to 8-0 for the spring season, boosting optimism for the 2008 season even further.
"It was great to win our own tournament in front of our own fans," Lady Techster coach Kevin Sherry said. "The manner in which we won was the most impressive aspect of the whole day. We controlled and maintained possession and were totally dominant defensively."
Tech defeated rival Louisiana-Monroe, 1-0, in the first game of the evening on the strength of a Katlyn Bachan goal less than three minutes in. ULM managed only three shots in the game as the Tech defense and midfield kept the ball on Tech's end of the pitch for the majority of the game, keeping pressure on the Warhawk defense.
The Techsters' second game of the night followed a similar trend as Centenary was unable to penetrate the Tech defense with any regularity. A beautiful first-half goal from Jill Pinder gave Tech a 1-0 lead it would not relinquish in 60 minutes of play. The Ladies were only able to muster one shot in the contest against a tough Tech defense.
In the evening's other contest, ULM and Centenary fought to a scoreless draw.
"We should have scored more goals with the possession and chances we had," Sherry said, "but two 1-0 wins is all you need at this stage in our development. We know we have players joining us in August who will help provide more firepower up front, so we are quietly confident the team is on the right track."
